Every year you want to show your love or appreciation for a special someone during the holidays by giving them something special and you want to pull your hair out of your head trying to come up with something. The person who has everything usually gets a lot of strange things that they will never use because people are just trying to come up with “something” Yes, there are trinkets that are fun and appreciated by all, but how many trinkets does one person need?

Some tell me that I am that person. I have “things” that have been given to me by people and I am not sure what to do with them or I already have two of whatever they have given me. Hear me, I appreciate the effort and thought that goes with the gift, I just don’t “need” anything. I am not saying it to brag by any means. I am by no means the richest person person when it comes to money, I am rich in friends, family and love. If you know me I would give you the shirt off my back it is just that life has been very good to me. I work hard, have had good luck and keep things on the straight and narrow. I count my blessings everyday.

So, if you have someone in your life that is blessed and has everything too I will give you the best gift idea for that person. Whatever money you would spend on that person for a gift, make a donation to a charity instead. No matter how small the amount is it will mean more than you know to the person who has everything and help change a complete stranger’s life. For me, I don’t care about another sweater, watch or jewelry. I have everything I need or want and if I don’t have it, I can get it for myself. Chances are the person you are thinking of does the same thing.

Think of the person and try to figure out what charity might be meaningful to your loved one. Maybe it is an animal charity, community organizations, homeless organization or something to help children. There are a million to choose from. For me, it is about the children. In the last couple of years I have been involved with an organization called Mothers Fighting for Others, which helps orphan children in Kenya Africa. I have asked my family members to donate to the charity instead of buying me anything. That means more to me than any “thing” means to me.

Believe me, it will mean more to your loved one, who has everything, to spend time and be with you during the holidays and that you thought enough of them to make a difference to someone else during the holidays. After all, isn’t that what giving is all about?

I would love to hear about some of the charities that benefited this holiday season. Holiday Blessings to all of you.

The Neighborhood is designed where you could Live, play and work in one area. Smaller yards, sidewalks and all of the amenities and shopping are within walking distance. The Kentlands is a very active, social community in the heart of Gaithersburg.

There is shopping of every kind from food to lawn mowers. Office space is available to run any and all businesses. The warmer months bring out the Farmer’s market, you have Whole Foods and Giant Grocery Stores. Lots of restaurants and pubs as well.
There are several differnent styles of homes. Everything from condos to Luxury single family homes and towns are available for all tastes and lifestyles. The Kentlands even has a senior apartment community.
The condos start, these days, in the low $200,000s and the single family homes can go up to the low $1,000,000. The style is a colonial Williamsburg theme through the neighborhood. The homes sit on small lots, we refer to them as zero lot lines. They are small, mostly decks or patios out back for yard space.

As entertainment goes, the center piece of the neighborhood is the Kentlands Mansion that was once owned by the Kent family who owned all of the land. The mansion is a place to hold events from Weddings to corporate business meetings. The home sets up on the hill overlooking the lake. Next is the Arts Barn. It sets behind the mansion and holds art exhibits, take art classes , even take in a play at the Arts Barn.

If you would rather take in a movie, the theatre is right up the street, and then you can go for pizza afterward.

No matter who you are, the Kentlands has a lifestyle just for you.

Did you know that Frederick is over 250 years old? Many of the major Civil War battles were fought around Frederick County. The Battle of Antietam, South Mountain and the Monocacy Battle. Frederick was the largest city during these battles and many of the wounded soldiers came to Frederick for medical help.

Downtown Frederick has been restored and updated over the years. Just think of the small quaint alley ways, wonder what is lurking there down the way? You can go antiquing down Patrick and Market streets. There are many restaurants for your dining pleasure. You can even live in a downtown loft.

All of this history and energy should conjure up some fun for Ghost walking in Frederick.
Many of my clients are first time homebuyers. I am honored to be involved in a person or couple’s first home purchase. It is a milestone in their life that they will someday look back on with pride that they accomplished and I played a role in the transaction.

I have also been lucky enough to be invited to some of their weddings. As it turns out, I have been invited to 4 weddings this year. It is typical for me to be invited to 3 or 4 weddings a year that are clients that I have become friends with. This year I have had my clients, Ben and Amanda, get married. Unfortunately I was out of town for their wedding. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend Wes and Rachel’s wedding last weekend.

It was a beautiful cermony, perfect weather and they were surrounded by so much love and happiness. It was a really great day. I am honored to have been included in yet another milestone in their lives. I know both couples will have many years of happiness and love.

The best part about real estate is that we get to participate in the real life stories of our clients. That is what I call success.

One of my favorite memories from my childhood was setting up the card table at the end of the driveway and sellin’ lemonade. I would be in charge of the sign. One paper cup of our best stuff would run ya a nickel. My mom would make the lemonade, or Kool-Aid if we had a special request and we would go out front and wait for the mad run on our lemonade stand. Strangers would stop by and get a cup or so and we had our regulars that would have a cup or so and visit with us. When we were all out, we were in charge of bringing in the pitcher and cups to Mom for clean up and Mom would get the card table for us. When the clean up was done, we would divy up the loot and run to the store and buy gum, candy, comics or the like. It was our money and we could do with it what we wanted.

As an adult I have always supported the local lemonade stand trade in my area. I have been out showing houses a few times to drive past kids selling lemonade. I ALWAYS pull over and treat my clients to a cup of the good stuff. It does two things, Gives us a little break and refreshment and thrills the kids. I think that those are the kinds of things that help build kid’s self esteem to know they can succeed.

Today, after I came home, I did my usual routine of getting Hutch, my dog, and going for our afternoon walk. We walked our normal trek and came back to find the kids that live across the street had set up shop while Hutch and I were out. The had the card table, sign, cups the entire deal. Jordan and Zander out there working their lemonade stand.

Now, I tell you, inflation is a tough thing but I think Jordan and Zander’s prices were fair. They charged .25 cents for one cup or two cups for .40 cents. Please note the sign, the bowl is for the money. I thought that was a pretty good deal. Jordan told my that one cup was one quarter and two cups were four quarters? Jordan also instructed me to make sure Hutch did not poop anywhere near the stand, it wouldn’t be good for business. I told her I understood and we would refrain from such things.

They were cute and so excited to sell their lemonade. They told me they would only be there as long they still had cups for customers and that they were not going to drink any of the lemonade, they had to save it for the customers.

Next time you are in Darnestown Maryland, be sure to stop off at Jordan and Zander’s Lemonade Stand. They are sure to please.

Hhmmm. . . . I think we might have a little agent in the making?

After the dryer came, the clothes were never hung out to dry on the clothes line. Sure, we had the drying rack thingamajig for delicate clothes, but never did our unmentionables go back outside. Then it seemed that you weren’t supposed to do that . . . Yards were for patios, pools and fancy landscaping.

Nowadays not only are you not supposed to hang your wears out for all of the neighbors to see, the Home owners associations in our area even state that this is a violation of the covenants. However, yesterday when I was showing houses I could see down in the next door neighbor’s yard a Clothesline. It was full too, with a full load of laundry. It was behind the fence so no one could see anything. It had been so long since I had seen laundry hung out on a clothes line it really stood out to me. It was kind of neat to be reminded of those old days being outside helping Mom.

Since being green is so en vogue this got me to think that maybe we should start hanging our unmentionables out for our neighbor to enjoy again to save energy. When you think about it, the dryer is one the most expensive appliances we run in our households. By considering this new chore we could not only save money, we could help save the planet.

Next we might consider hand washing our clothes again . . . Nah, we don’t want get too crazy with ourselves.

I work with many first time homebuyers. I love them, they are eager to learn the process from start to finish and they are so proud at the sucess of their first home. It is so cool when that happens. Not to pick on the guys, but I think some women are not sure about this subject.

For single women though, I think some of you don’t think you can’t do it. I think many women still think they need to wait for their Knight in Shinning Armour to show up and that is when these types of life decisions start to take place. Not so I say. As a former single female first time home buyer, I say go for it. You can do it.

Did you know, as a single home buyer you make up about 18% of the home sales across the country?

Here’s how strong you are;

Many of us are waiting to marry or cohabit later in life, but there is no need to put your life on hold in regard to making a home buying decision. I remember about 5 years ago I had a buyer, a Single woman around 30 who said to me “I don’t know why I put this on hold? I think I have been waiting to be rescued and now I have missed out on buying a home at a lower price waiting for prince charming.” That just smacked me right across the head as an “Ah ha moment”. What are we thinking? We can do it.

Right now, my buyer pool has 3 single, never been married woman, on the hunt for a new home in the Gaithersburg/Germantown area. I am so proud of them and their strength. You should find yourself a REALTOR(R) and a lender that you know and trust to guide you through the transaction. It is not as difficult as you may think. It will be one of the magic moments in your life, owning your first home.

You Go girl, you are stronger than you think!!
